    Off Topic: Joen, the header image you’re using at the moment is absolutely beautiful. Can you tell us any more about it?

    • Where was it taken?
    • What camera did you use?
    • What work did you do to the original image and with what software?
    • Etc…

      I apologise for the OT post but I simply have to know more. :-)

    I just returned from the festival. It was muddy, but great. I’ll write about it in detail in the morning.

    Jonathan, to answer your questions:

    1. “It” actually consists of two images from different locations. The background is a closeup of a raspberry plant (with no berries) in the garden of our swedish house. We have a little house that resides in a town called V?nnaryd. Other pictures from the same series can be seen here.

    The flower, in its original form can be found here. It was photographed in a place north of Malm? Sweden, called “Kullen”. It’s a rocky coast stretch, full of oak trees and beautiful flowers, no to mention the underwater environment (which I, unfortunately, couldn’t photograph).

    2. The camera is an aging Canon Digital Ixus V2 (2 megapixel). It’s not really an up-to-date camera, but it works reasonably well. I plan to buy a new one soon, although I can warmly recommend the Canon Ixus series (the new 500 is great!) to any starting photographers. It’s slim and has good lenses.

    3. To explain, I’ll post a snippet from my newsletter, seeing as I’ve already written a bit about it. It’s supposed to be a subscriber exclusive, buuut I’ll make an exception today.

    About the layered .TIFF file

    Exclusively for you subscribers, I have a layered TIFF file. It is in the TIFF format because it allows smaller filesizes than the superior Photoshop PSD format, but if you open the TIFF in Photoshop you’ll be fine.

    The picture is built on simple photography. It’s color is changed using the “Hue” layer effect, which I actually have never used before. I found it worked well to tint the image in the same direction, but with enough contrast between light and dark.

    The composition and addition of imagery is fairly straightforward.

    The various pixel-patterns used (unfortunately they aren’t very visible in this 50% scaled TIFF version), were painted on 6×6 or 4×4 px canvases in Photoshop using the pencil tool. This pattern (black on transparent), I selected using the marquee, and chose “Edit > Define Pattern”. This stores your pattern in Photoshops pattern library. Later, when you make a selection (even a soft graded one as I used in this image), you can choose “Edit > Fill > Pattern”, and choose your pixelpattern to fill with. It remembers transparent areas.

    If you download the TIFF file, and sort apart the layers in Photoshop, you’ll see how the image is built up.
