January Storm

Storm

You may or may not have heard about the storm that hit Scandinavia just after the new year. But to the Swedes, it matters to this day.

As of this writing, several hundreds, maybe even more than a thousand households are still without electricity. To make matters worse, these households are usually electrically heated because they’re typically located in the middle of a forest.

Estimates say the storm has logged up to 7 years worth of wood, costing Sweden up to 30bn Swedish Kronors.

Some week ago, I visited our house to see if it had managed. Fortunately it had, save for a few trees and some tipped over tiles on the woodshed. But the surroundings were less lucky.

Here are some photos of some of the damages the storm did. The last two pictures are from last year, to show a “before” picture of one of the most affected areas.

  1. As tragic as it is, let’s just leave the storm damage aside for the moment so that I can say:

Joen, I am deeply jealous! I would love to live where your house is. The area looks so peaceful and tranquil – and very, very beautiful.

I might just retire to Sweden. :-)

    Thanks Jonathan,

You’re located in the UK right? There are some very nice places I’d like to visit there as well, so don’t be all too jealous :)

  3. Yes, I’m in the UK. I live in Yorkshire which is itself a very beautiful area. Despite living in a big city, I can enjoy open countryside with just an hour’s drive. I’m close to the North Yorkshire Moors, the Peak District, the Pennines, etc. In two hours I can be in Wales or Scotland, enjoying even more beautiful countryside, mountain-scapes and so on. I can also be at the coast in an hour and a half (in either western or eastern directions).

So, all in all, I have it all. Even so, I have always been attracted to Scandinavia (and Scandinavian women) and I will travel there at some point in the future.

Have you ever been to Iceland Joen?

  4. Naja says:
