[Update]: It’s not a happy little guy in a jumpsuit. It’s still a red, capital O. It’s just a tweaked O. Pity. (Thanks Alexander).
New Opera Icon [Update]
According to Jon Hicks, the Opera browser is set to get a new icon, designed by Oleg Melnychuk. It’s a little happy guy in a red jumpsuit, sporting the a capital O on his tummy. Certainly an improvement over the old one, while still not redoing the entire logo (which I’m sure the darkly suited guys at Opera must’ve opposed because they’re scared of a re-brand).
Um. I think you got that wrong… If you DOWNLOAD the RC1, you might notice it already HAS a new icon (which is the one Jon referenced). The new icon was designed by Mr. Oleg (@melnychuk). It’s a more polished version of the old logo.
There will be no rebrand and no jumpsuit guy.
Interesting. So do you know where the new icon can be seen, without having to download the RC?
I want to know where you found the jumpsuit guy – I can’t find mention of him anywhere!
Glad they’ve updated the logo, but a shame it’s not been done better. It still doesn’t look like a browser logo, though maybe it’s not supposed to.
I’ve been getting into “speed blogging”, hehe, so I got a bit ahead of myself. I found the jumpsuit guy here: http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2009/08/25/opera-10-0-release-candidate — it looks like it’s just an avatar image. Larger version here: http://my.opera.com/haavard/blog/
It’s no longer an eye-sore, but it’s still a capital O set in a non-tech font. The jumpsuit guy is actually an example of how the logo could be updated, without messing with the identity. After all, Opera is also a company — Opera Browser could easily be something else, featuring the O. On his tummy.
Thanks Joen – he’s a funky little dude!
I rather like this red icon/logo – keeps a round, red shape but moves towards the globe that has become so associated with browsers.
what the fuck are they thinking with that new icon?!? it’s HORRIBLE!!!
It’s not horrible… it’s just not very much better than the old icon.
