I’m on Slicehost too, with Google Apps for mail etc. Works like a charm, so far. Had a traffic spike a while back which was taking the site down on the smallest package, so upgraded my slice on the fly – a few minutes of downtime and everything was running smoothly again.

Every account comes with SSH/Shell access, though you need to contact support to enable it. The shared and VPS servers are powered by CentOS, but you can choose your own linux distro on the dedicated servers. If you mean installing things like WordPress, then you can certainly install whatever. As for apache modules and other such things, I would say that the answer is 90% of whatever on a shared server (you would need to ask support to do it), 99% of whatever on a VPS, and 100% of whatever on a dedicated server. Remote backups are done regularly, but can certainly run your own backups either manually or via a cron script.

I highly highly highly recommend A Small Orange. They never oversell their servers, their reliability is top-notch, and their support staff is very kind, knowledgeable, and quick to respond and fix problems. They have shared, business (shared but with less accounts per server), VPS, and dedicated server options. I went through four hosts in my first year and have been with A Small Orange for the last five years. I joined ASO when they were just starting out. They have grown significantly since then, but they still have that nice small-shop feel.

Yay, Slicehost! I use them as well right now, but only for hosting important, offsite stuff. Like email and some high importance backups.

Why only offsite stuff? Also, I’m soooo thrilled with Google Apps for my email. It works like such a charm, and it’s just a load off my chest.

I’m mostly happy with their system (and backups), but they aren’t quite price competitive with some offerings. I think Rackspace offers a better deal, but I’m not inclined to redo my entire server.

Well on first glance, the prices were fair. Turns out I was so much of a noob that I assumed the 256 slice would be sufficient to power several of my WordPress sites. Which it’s not. Site was down this morning, due to too high ram usage. I’m already at the 512 slice, and I’ve done some mysql tweaks to improve things.

So, plenty fabulous things to say about slicehost, really I love them. But my middle name isn’t greedy for no reason. So I gotta say I’m already looking for alternatives.

Rackspace you say? I’ve also been recommended Linode, but they don’t yet have backups. Any other alternatives you can recomend?

Everything appears to working right, but there’s just one cosmetic issue. I’m seeing “journal” twice in the top navigation bar. The first goes to the root directory, and the second goes to /journal.
