Syriana Mini-Review Comments 3 Comments

February 27th, 2006 ,

Reviews are spoilerfree but beware of comments.

Syriana is a complex story of how the oil industry stops the middle-east from developing and how the chaos of war helps keep it that way.

We follow several main characters; a CIA operative that begins to doubt the karma of what he’s doing. An oil broker recovering from a tragedy who learns of the honorable ambitions of a local prince. A Washington lawyer pondering the ethics of a merger between two oil companies. Lastly, a pakistani teenager who becomes collateral damage for this merger.

If only more films today were as politically ambitious as Syriana, we’d have a healthier landscape for political discussion. Unfortunately, Syriana is messy, overly complex and hard to follow. While the story is fairly engaging, it should be possible for the film to communicate it’s main themes and still be 45 minutes shorter.

Syriana is a good and fairly watchable movie, but ultimately it crumbles beneath it’s own ambitions.

Liquid Is The New Fixed Comments 11 Comments

February 23rd, 2006 ,

Lately I’ve found myself warming up to liquid width designs for websites. By liquid width, I’m referring of course to a design whose width adapts to the available browser real estate.

Perhaps it’s the stale verticality of weblogs, perhaps it’s merely because screens and resolutions are growing. In any case, I find myself going liquid more often than fixed.

For those of you about to go liquid, start by reading the archives of Douglas Bowman for a great primer.

The Future of Fireworks Comments 1 Comment

February 23rd, 2006 ,

Now that Adobe and Macromedia have come together, we’re busily planning our next moves, and it would be great to get your input. Fireworks Product Manager Danielle Beaumont has posted a message saying that Fireworks is alive and well at Adobe, and we’re working to define the best course for each app.

John Nack from Adobe asks what you would want for the future of Macromedia Adobe Fireworks. If you love Fireworks, and don’t want Adobe to kill it off in favor of ImageReady, then this is probably your best chance to do something about it.

Munich Mini-Review Comments 5 Comments

February 20th, 2006 ,

Reviews are spoilerfree but beware of comments.

Munich tries to tell the story of what happened after the massacre at the Olympics in 1972. The protagonist, Eric Bana, is given the task of assassinating each of the 11 terrorists that had a hand in planning the massacre. It is a tale of bloody revenge and Munich is very graphic in showing the horror.

Like Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven, Steven Spielberg tries to show both sides of the story surrounding the events. On one hand, 11 Israeli athletes were brutally murdered. On the other side stands the Palestinians, that “when treated like a dog, will act like one too”. The duality is shown in how our protagonist slowly loses what he calls home: his family, while on the other side, the Palestinians are simply fighting for a home: Palestine.

Munich is a well acted, well scripted and fairly well paced. It’s a very watchable and good movie.

A good domain (DNS) host - Any recommendations? Comments 19 Comments

February 16th, 2006

I am looking for a new host for my domain names. I’m completely happy with my Armadahosting server, but UKReg, my current domain host annoys me at times.

So, any recommendations? I’m looking for these features:

  • Ability to modify name servers (DNS)
  • One account / control panel - several domain names
  • Fair prices
  • Support for .com, .org and .dk domains
  • Bonus: Ability to forward from a domain to a different server
  • Bonus: Ability to define subdomains

I’d appreciate any advice.

Beautiful China Comments 9 Comments

In a morning-coffee digg, I found these beatiful images of China. Absolutely, utterly, incredibly beatiful. Sure they’re taken by a good photographer, sure they’re post-processed to increase contrast. Yet, beneath it all, it’s still a slightly alien ethereal landscape. Astonishing.
