StrokeIt Mouse Gestures

June 22nd, 2006 by Joen , ,

gesture, n. the use of movements (especially of the hands) to communicate familiar or prearranged signals

A mouse gesture is a specific movement of the mouse which triggers a specific action. For example, holding the right mouse button and moving the mouse in a downwards right-to-left diagonal motion minimizes the window on which the gesture is performed. StrokeIt (no jokes please) adds such mouse gestures to all Windows applications.

Having used StrokeIt for quite a while now, the “About” box reveals that I have performed 23105 gestures since I installed it. This is time not spent trying to hit those tiny “Close”, “Minimize” and “Maximize” buttons, but instead (hopefully) on more productive things.

Note: while StrokeIt comes with countless built-in gestures, I find myself only using a few. Also, there are applications where gestures are best left disabled. As such, feel free to grab my StrokeIt settings and import them (make sure you delete existing gestures first).

Pretty cool software! Downloaded it, though you guys do have a head start I'm well into a good challenge :)

First heard of gestures as a popular firefox extension, for closing tabs etc. Well I guess especially when it comes to laptop touch pads short and easy gestures is essential .

Thanks for the link, and your settings.

One important aspect of StrokeIt is that while you can get mouse gesture plugins for Firefox, and Opera even comes with one by default, StrokeIt can be set to have unique gestures for unique programs. I.e. StrokeIt can not only replace existing mouse gesture plugins or extensions, but provide their effects in other applications as well.

Now I don't have Windows at home, and I'm not sure how my employer would feel if I installed weird applications/extensions on my work computers, but it's a very interesting piece of software. Maybe I should just try it out, time saved hunting for the minimize/maximize buttons or accidentially hitting the close button could be spent elsewhere much better.

I've used ot for the better part of a year now, and it hasn't broken anything yet. My heartiest recommendations.
