Textile Live Preview (AJAX Version) Plugin for Wordpress Comments 10 Comments

September 24th, 2006

I have just released a new live preview for Wordpress plugin that uses AJAX. Like last time, the bulk of the code is by the excellent Jeff Minard.

Upload and activate. It’s really nice. Trust me.

Note: For now, this plugin will bork if you feed it a link containing an anchor. Like this one. The rest will work just fine.

For the last 5 years, I’ve tried to adhere to a personal creative schedule of 5 illustrations (or whatever I feel like) per month. It’s worked so far…

Star Trek! Remastered! [Update] Comments 1 Comment

September 19th, 2006 , ,

Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

Star Trek, the wagon train to the stars, is going the way of Star Wars with regards to updated special effects. Specifically, “The Original Series” is getting a digital makeover. Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki, has pictures of the updated Enterprise ship, and a comparison “before and after” shot of an updated scene.

The question is: why an updated Star Trek and not Firefly Season 2? I think I know the answer, but you go ahead.

Update: View a bundle of comparison images from the old version and the new version.

Engadget’s Scalable Images Comments 9 Comments

September 18th, 2006 ,

Everyones favourite gadget site Engadget has just redesigned. The new design is stretchy and liquid width. That’s not all: their images scale-to-fit too using the following markup:

img.biggie { width: 98%; max-width: 860px; }

On the downside, letting the browser do the scaling means the image will be resized using nearest neighbour interpolation as opposed to bicubic interpolation (at least on the browsers I’ve tried). The result is jaggies in the resized image. This is the main reason I chose to not do this when I redesigned a while back.

Penny for your thoughts? Are scalable images an improvement or not?

Pretty is relative

September 14th, 2006

In my experience a good interface design goes by unnoticed. I jump in and know how things work, how to go about my business. The cog-wheels of the engine beneath grind creak and turn exactly the way I expect them to.

In my first article for the Titoonic website, I dive into discussing what really makes a good interface design. Feel free to comment on the titoonic website: Pretty is relative.

Representing “Elsinore” in Adobe’s Flash Tenth Anniversary Comments 2 Comments

September 13th, 2006 ,

Browsing to 1999 of Adobe’s lavish Flash Tenth Anniversary presentation reveals a tiny red glowing dot hovering above the Danish coastal city of Elsinore. Sure enough, “Turtleshell” it says, which is of course referring to my archaic 1998-1999 website.

Ironically, this presentation website takes forever to load, reminding us all of the early days of abusive Flash web-design. For those of you who do not care to wait, I have put up some screenshots on my Flickr site (Screenshot 1, Screenshot 2).

Peter Jackson To Direct “Temeraire” Fantasy Series Comments 3 Comments

September 12th, 2006 ,

Peter Jackson is eyeing his next fantasy series, optioning “Temeraire.” The historical fantasy series (”His Majesty’s Dragon,” “Throne of Jade” and “Black Powder War”) was written by Naomi Novik.

The “Temeraire” saga reimagines the world of the Napoleonic Wars with the addition of an air force of dragons and valiant aviators. It centers on British naval Capt. Will Laurence, who captures a French ship, where he discovers an unhatched dragon egg in the hold — a gift from the Emperor of China intended for Napoleon. When the egg hatches, he is forced to give up his naval career to become captain of the dragon he names Temeraire.

Sounds interesting. I can’t wait til he picks up steampunk.

“Temeraire is a terrific meld of two genres that I particularly love — fantasy and historical epic,” Jackson said. “I can’t wait to see Napoleonic battles fought with a squadron of dragons. That’s what I go to the movies for.”

I couldn’t agree more.
