Adobe CS3 Icons Comments 10 Comments

December 21st, 2006 , ,

Adobe has released a color wheel showing the new Adobe CS3 icons. But wait, a color wheel? Yep. As it turns out, the new brand includes icons that are simply colored squares with periodic-table-of-the-elements like names; Ai for Illustrator, Ps for Photoshop, Fl for Flash.

Sure, I recognize a … ahem … whole palette [...]

Annoyances: Creative Capitalization Comments 5 Comments

December 20th, 2006

In this first annoyance of what I hope will become a series (no, I’m no longer a happy elf), I’ll attack a thing that bugs me incredibly. Creative capitalization. I’m referring of course to the capitalization of parts of a word, to ones own amusement:

  • MicroSoft
  • MacroMedia
  • PhotoShop
  • FireFox
  • DreamWeaver
  • InDesign (Yes, I’m looking at you, Adobe!)
  • NoScope

What’s next, AppLe? Your suggestions?

Jakob’s Top 10 Movie UI Bloopers Comments 9 Comments

December 19th, 2006 , ,

My favourite usability guru, Jakob Nielsen, lists his top 10 movie UI mistakes:

  1. The Hero Can Immediately Use Any UI
  2. Time Travelers Can Use Current Designs
  3. The 3D UI
  4. Integration is Easy, Data Interoperates
  5. Access Denied / Access Granted
  6. Big Fonts
  7. Star Trek’s Talking Computer
  8. Remote Manipulators (Waldo Controls)
  9. You’ve Got Mail is Always Good News
  10. “This is Unix, It’s Easy”

As usual, I’ll have to agree with Jakob Nielsen. I’ve always gotten either a good laugh or cry from movie computer interfaces. While I understand the dramatic overstatement and readability screen graphics need, some of them are simply lame (Swordfish, anyone?). Jakob concludes that we should demand more realistic UI design in movies, otherwise your mom will think it’s her fault when she can’t immediately access a random UNIX system.

Rumors On A New Future OSX Interface [Update] Comments 4 Comments

December 15th, 2006 ,

I’m just now surfacing after 7 days of the flu, trying to catch up on the feed-reader. Being interested in interface design, one thing sprung out; if you’re a mac fan, you might have already read it: rumor has it that the next mac operating system, OSX, will get a new interface. The rumor elaborates that this new interface will feature black gloss, lights, and be codenamed “Illuminous”.

Now whether this rather baseless rumor is true or not is less important; some time in the future, OSX will get a new interface, if nothing else because the OS will become vectorized and resolution independant. As such, speculating on the look is less important than what this’ll mean for the interaction between man/machine.

As the attentive reader will know, I’m personally hoping for a true fullscreen option and close buttons that actually closes their applications. Why do I care, when I use Windows, you ask? Well because I might one day switch, should Apple choose to fix these nuisances.

What would you want changed/fixed/added in a future OSX?

[Update]: ThinkSecret has posted possible screenshots.

Casino Royale Mini-Review Comments 1 Comment

December 6th, 2006

Reviews are spoilerfree but beware of comments.

Casino Royale is the newest James Bond movie. It is also the name of the first book about the secret agent, as written by his creator Ian Fleming.

Most interestingly, it is a movie that completely ignores the events of the past 20 Bond movies. It is a reboot, if you will; James Bond Begins. This works really well for Casino Royale. Not only is it a “back to basics” approach, but we also get to see how Bond became Bond. Add to that great acting, great casting, a decent storyline and Eva Green and you have a winning combination.

Even so, there are elements of this movie I dislike, hence only resulting in 4 stars.

My Brush With Database Death Comments 7 Comments

If you visited Noscope last night between 23:20 and 23:50, you’d see anguish and pain. Well, actually you’d see the body of every entry ever written simply say post_content, but the former more accurately represents what I saw.

Wallpapers, Updated Comments Comment

December 4th, 2006 ,

The Noscope wallpaper section has been updated. It is now draped in a proper port of my Pangea design with a few tweaks here and there, and I have updated the sections to be simpler and fewer. Now, dive into wallpaper categories like “Lights”, “Illustrations”, “Photos” or the new “Generative”, which (currently) features a single wallpaper created using the engine I’ll be using for Noscope December (which is upcoming).

On a sidenote: I am eagerly awaiting an update to ZenPhoto which adds sub-folders so I can combine the Photography and Wallpaper sections (Hey Tristan, are you reading this?). When that happens: what should I call the new section? Photostream? Picturestream? Pictures?

What’s In A Good 404? Comments 17 Comments

December 2nd, 2006 ,

404?

The dreaded 404 error code essentially means “not found”. Visit a webpage that’s not there anymore, and you’ll probably see such a message.

What’s required for a pleasant 404 design? Automatic search for what’s not found? Good guesses? Or simply a short friendly message?

Noscope has an updated 404 page. I went with simple & friendly. How about you?
