Reviving Dune II

Dune 2

Remember Dune II? If you don’t, you missed out on a great game and probably the founding father of the real time strategy genre. If you did play it back in the days, however, you’re likely to fondly remember the delicate balance of harvesting spice while protecting against sandworm attacks, all the while building up your base and preparing your sonic tanks to charge into a Harkonnen base.

The game, first made popular on the Amiga, was more or less loosely based on the sci-fi book series by Frank Herbert. The books told of the planet Arrakis, desolate and dry, home of the precious substance “Melange” (french for mixture) and home of the native people—the Fremen—able to live off the land.

Well it seems the game might be getting an indie-revival. No, I’m not referring to the Dune 2000 remake, or the Emperor pseudo-sequel, I’m talking Dune 2. Dune 2: The Maker, is Dune 2, but with modern-day controls, such as the now de-facto drag/rectangle-selection right-click/attack style control. Too good to be true? Try the tech preview, it looks very promising. There’s your saturday afternoon nostalgic trip to the past.

Did you play this game? Which side did you prefer? I was Atreides, all the way.

  1. Who doesn’t?

Dude, that gamed ruled. I was talking to someone about it last night as the original in the modern strategy family.

  2. Joen says:

It was the original, in the sense that there would have been no World of Warcraft without Dune 2. Just trackback, Warcarft 3, Warcraft 2, Warcraft 1, Command and Conquer, Dune 2.
