Cinematic Asthma Comments 9 Comments

April 30th, 2007 ,

Rewatching Casino Royale the other day, I noticed Le Chiffre (danish actor by the way) reach for his inhaler to deal with an instant case of asthma. Having said respiratory disorder, I know for a fact that that’s not how it works.

Acute medicine to be taken to unblock the throat immediately. It’s not to be taken every other minute. I noticed the same thing in Superman Returns with Lois Lanes kid. If it was real life and not a movie, he’d be very lightheaded by now.

Quotes on Freedom Comments 2 Comments

A tyrant is always stirring up some war in order that the people may require a leader.
- Plato

The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them that they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and [...]

Everyone’s A Radio Host Comments 9 Comments

April 25th, 2007

I’ve found myself to be wanting to share newly discovered music with, well, everyone. I’ve also found myself to not be alone in this urge to share.

It seems to me that the ability to listen to what someone else is listening to should be the next step for services such as last.fm. Of course that requires quite a hosted database of music. Alternatively, since we have both chat and video in IM programs, why not a “listen to” feature? I’d love that in Google Talk.

Can I get an amen?

One Window Web-Development? Comments 17 Comments

April 24th, 2007 ,

With last weeks comment scare, I think hope it’s now safe to use the comments again. Right now I’m wondering what web development app(s) my esteemed readers are using for their coding needs. Just this morning, John Gruber wrote about Coda, a so-called “one window web-development app”; meaning: one app to browse, code & upload your website.

But what’s so special about that? I’ve used Dreamweaver for ages, and it does just that: browse, code & upload. Are Coda and Dreamweaver really the only two apps that do this? And would you prefer such an environment, or do you have your own setup?

Backup Solution: Check! Comments 12 Comments

April 17th, 2007

This will be an opportunity for you to point at me and laugh. Today, I have a proper backup solution. I have just purchased and received a Western Digital “My Book” 250 GB (More photos) external hard-drive for backup alone. Why laugh, you ask? Well because I haven’t had a proper backup system until today.

The drive itself looks nice, is very quiet, is as fast as USB 2 allows and is generally nice (considering the price was rather low). It does have an external PSU. It doesn’t have a special “backup everything” button, I plan to either manually do my backups or explore a software solution.

Are you backed-up?

Showdown: Adobe vs. Microsoft Comments 15 Comments

April 17th, 2007 , ,

Adobe has started shipping their Creative Suite 3 including a new Adobe Media Player. Incidentally, Microsoft has also just launched their competitor, Microsoft Silverlight (previously known as Windows Presentation Foundation/Everywhere, or WPF/E).

The competition is direct; Adobe now has a web media player solution (video on demand, trailers, there are plenty of reasons to have a strong offering here) and Apollo, a crossplatform runtime that allows one to create web-apps; applications that work like regular appplications, but are/can be deeply integrated with the web (RIAs). In the other corner, we have Silverlight which claims to do exactly the same. In various commentary we’re told that whichever platform wins, both companies win. Even so, there’s nothing like a good cagematch and some healthy competition. Round one: Fight!

What If Life Were More Like An RPG [Update] Comments 7 Comments

April 16th, 2007 , ,

Armed with Final Fantasy 3 on my DS, the other day I was following the intricacies of a standard Final Fantasy quest. Explore the dungeon - fight the monsters - approach the throne - fight the baddie - save the crystal. The predictable formula made me wonder: What if life were more like an RPG? I imagine …

  • There would be a lot more pharmacies and armor stores.
  • It would be okay to kill someone, but only if they looked dangerous and the killing was for experience points.
  • Most people would look exactly like eachother.
  • There would be no cars, only airships.
  • Post offices would be entirely handled by little furry teddy bears.
  • In place of governments, there would be 4 crystals. Earth, wind, fire and water. Possibly more.
  • Hospitals would have it easier; casting “Phoenix Down” would resurrect people, “Hi-Potion” would heal wounds, and “Antidote” would cure all poisons.

Update 1: Some more gems, courtesy of Hans-Henrik, Titoonic’s game designer:

  • If your friends were confused, they would start hitting you with big swords.
  • Blindness would be an instant affliction and instantly curable.
  • And of course bloody fanfares all the bloody time.

Bloggers Code of Conduct: Should We Censor Ourselves? Comments 13 Comments

April 11th, 2007 , ,

When Tim O’Reilly drafted a Bloggers Code of Conduct, it sent waves through the so-called blogosphere. While O’Reilly encourages open discussion on this draft, it begs the question: do we even need a code of conduct at all?

300 Mini-Review Comments Comment

April 6th, 2007 ,

Reviews are spoilerfree but beware of comments.

300 is based on Frank Miller’s comic-book of the same name. It creatively re-tells the story of the Battle of Thermopyl?, where 300 spartan warriors held their ground against a persion army of millions.

300 is an extremely stylistic action porno with lots of slow-motion and gallons of blood splatter. It’s the sort of movie that garners grunts, snickers and “Hell yeah”s from the cinema audience. For what it tries to be, it succeeds immensely. It’s one of the best action movies I’ve seen in a long time.

For the action, I give two stars. For the style and art direction, I give another two. This leaves room for two more stars that should’ve been depth and character development. As it stands, 300 is an extremely cool looking exhilerating action flick. Unfortunately, that’s also all it is. The emotional attachment in say, The Lord of the Rings, could really have done wonders for 300.
