Dear Sean Connery, A.K.A. Dr. Henry Jones Comments 3 Comments

June 25th, 2007 ,

I thought long and hard about it and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement it would have been an Indiana Jones film. [...] But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun.

The above is a quote from Sean Connery on the participation as Dr. Henry Jones in the upcoming Indiana Jones 4. Source.

Blu-Ray: Why The Ugly Boxing? Comments 3 Comments

June 19th, 2007

It happens every time. Whenever a new storage medium appears, the boxing for the first year or two will be painfully ugly. Think brushed metal, big logos and ugly stickers. Case in point: Pirates of the Caribbean on Blu-Ray. Why oh why does every new storage medium go through this process?

WP-Cache Not Clearing When Comments Are Posted! Anyone Else Experiencing This? Comments 6 Comments

June 17th, 2007 ,

I have struggled with this for so long now, and I cannot for the life of me figure out what the problem is. So I turn to you, dear reader. In order to take off some of the load on my database server, I’m using the excellent WP-Cache plugin. The plugin automatically writes static HTML files to the server, serving these to visitors instead of asking the database for a fresh copy every time. The cache is supposed to be purged whenever someone posts a comment.

Except, this doesn’t work for me. I have scoured the web, including the Wordpress forums. People seem to have all sorts of problems, some have even created plugins to purge the cache when the admin loads. Am I missing something? Isn’t WP-Cache supposed to purge the static files when content is updated? And if not, shouldn’t there at least be an option to tell it to do so?

Another Piece of Flash Bites the Dust Comments 18 Comments

June 14th, 2007 , ,

The real secret to web 2.0 (the bullshit bingo word everyone is throwing around these days) is that good websites can make money. Part of that means making sure things are easy to use. As much as I like Flash, it’s rarely what makes a website userfriendly. And so, like Flickr dropped their Flash-based image note viewer, so have I dropped my Flash-based installment teaser image viewer located on the right hand side of the index page. The result? A faster, more compatible, more user-friendly piece of web code on which middle-click/open in tab works. There’s a time and place for Flash, this wasn’t it.

Really Quick Thoughts On The New Apple Desktop Look Comments 5 Comments

June 11th, 2007 , , ,

Leopard Desktop Apple just redesigned their website. Along with that, they’ve released a few videos of Leopard, the next version of OSX.

Some interesting pieces from the desktop videodespises the dock. In any case, it looks like Apple really shines with their incremental improvements. Still no fullscreen, though.

Safari for Windows - No Really! It’s Not WebKit! Comments 15 Comments

June 11th, 2007 , ,

From the “what the hell” department comes this: Safari 3 Public Beta. For Windows.

I’ll just make a linebreak and let that one sink in.

There. Now: what’s up with this? Is it an attempt to sway Windows users of iTunes? Is it a gift to web-developers hungry for developing crossplatform sites? Is it part of a bigger and currently veiled plan to enter the RIA (Adobe AIR, Microsoft Silverlight, Firefox 3 Offline Apps) market? Or is it trying to compete with IE7 and Firefox? Please, somebody tell me!

Apollo Becomes AIR Comments 4 Comments

June 11th, 2007 ,

Adobe’s new web application framework previously code-named Apollo got a few neat things over the weekend. First of all, it’s name is now AIR: Adobe Integrated Runtime. More interestingly, the video is now hardware accelerated. Poof. The latter is definitely a step in the right direction. But why not full hardware acceleration for all flash content?

Movable Type 4: Open Source! Comments 11 Comments

June 5th, 2007

Very recently announced, a version of Movable Type 4.0 will be open source:

The MTOS Project is a community and Six Apart driven project that will produce an open souce (sic) version of the Movable Type Publishing Platform that will form the core of all other Movable Type products.

This is, no doubt, in response to the fierce competition to the far superior Wordpress and up-and-coming products such as Habari et. al. I used to run MT on this very blog, so the real question is: too little, too late? My mind immediately jumps to an article entitled Freedom 0 by Mark Pilgrim, which I’m sure caused countless of MT users to switch to Wordpress.

That said, I’ve begun to actually miss the static pages that MT generated. For once, I’d like to see the file-server go down, rather than the database-server. WP-Cache just isn’t cutting it. There’s more on both the Open Source aspect and the new features.

Ode to Fallout 2: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game [Update 2] Comments Comment

June 5th, 2007 ,

Today is the day the teaser trailer for Fallout 3 launches. While we are standing by for the video, here’s an ode to what made the Fallout 3 hype what it is today.

Fallout 2 is a tile-based, isometric, post-apocalyptic role-playing game. It is the partially inspired by the Mad Max films, a sequel to Fallout and in my opinion, the best of all the Fallout games. Here’s a small list of what made Fallout 2 excellent.

YouTube + Quality = Profit? Comments 8 Comments

June 4th, 2007 ,

YouTube annoys me to no end. It’s loaded with dimwitted comments, and it’s design, while simplish, is ugly. Even so, videos like these Transformers clips ([1], [2]) keep me coming back. So, now that we have to put up with all the other things, can’t Google at least improve the video quality? I know I’d willingly sacrifice at least 1 GB from my Gmail account if it made a difference. Can anyone tell me why the quality has to be last-century?

Video editor Benjamin Binderup wanted a quick portfolio website and provided the design himself. I provided a fully editable administration section powered by ZenPhoto giving Benjamin the ability to upload, sort and categorize videos himself and on the fly.
