Mozilla Unveils Prism: (Another) Web-App Framework Comments 5 Comments

October 30th, 2007 , , ,

Mozilla has just launched another web-app framework. Prism, kinda like Adobe AIR and Microsoft Silverlight, allows you to take websites with you to the Desktop.

It works this way: first you install Mozilla Prism. Then you start the app and type in the URL of the website you want to take with you to the desktop. [...]

Best and Worst Logo Redesigns Comments 2 Comments

October 25th, 2007

A cleverly collected list of logo redesigns, the best and worst of them. I agree with most of the assessments, but I’m undecided on the Pantone logo. To me, the old one wasn’t very good, and the new one seems slightly better. Honestly, I think Pantone has bigger problems than their new logo. Missing from the list, by the way, the recent Quark logo redesigns.

Gmail Gets IMAP Support Comments 2 Comments

October 24th, 2007 ,

Big news for fans of Gmail and standalone email clients: IMAP support. What’s that you ask? Well according to Wikipedia:

[IMAP] is an application layer Internet protocol [...] that allows a local client to access e-mail on a remote server.

Having never used IMAP myself before, this sounds to me like you can now use your Gmail account without ever logging into the online web interface. Using the IMAP commands, you can send, delete, archive and spam your Gmail directly from compatible clients such as Thunderbird. Now even though I’ve fully switched from Thunderbird, I can still see the smartness in this. Your Gmail account just became a funnel for all your other mail accounts. One account to rule them out. You pick your interface. Neat.

I was sent this link to Joshua Blankenship’s “notes to self”. I’ve never seen the appeal of Twitter, but I do see the appeal in this.

Kent - Tillbaka Till Samtiden MiniReview Comments 2 Comments

October 17th, 2007 , ,

Reviews are spoilerfree but beware of comments.

Tillbaka Till Samtiden (Back to our contemporary age) is the title of the 7th studio album from swedish band Kent.

To Kent fans reading this, first a guide to listening: this is not a traditional Kent album. Listen to it as you would a new Depeche Mode or Radiohead album. It’s not the same old, [...]

The New Ubuntu Wallpaper Comments 4 Comments

October 17th, 2007 ,

The new default wallpaper for Ubuntu Linux v. 7.10 has been picked. It’s an abstract rendering of light stripes in a brownish hue. Much like previous previous Ubuntu wallpapers, this says “Ubuntu is brown”. It’s nice to see wallpapers getting branding recognition among mainstream operating systems. Maybe it will prevent us ever getting the awful rolling fields from the Windows XP period. In other news, the new Mac OSX Leopard wallpaper is a starfield, or a nightsky with northern lights.

Newscope Part 2: The Mini-Extreme Makeover Comments 7 Comments

October 13th, 2007 , , ,

When I decided to go freelance, I could have chosen to sell my services from another domain, separating personal from work stuff. There are a couple of reasons why I chose to keep things here at Noscope, the first and foremost being that keeping things here was the quick and easy thing to do. Secondly, [...]

Firefox 3 Visual Refresh Comments Comment

October 11th, 2007 , , , ,

Interaction designer Alex Faaborg has emerging details on the visual refresh that’s being worked on for Firefox 3:

Visual integration with Windows and OS X is our primary objective for the Firefox 3 refresh.

Fitting in to the visual appearance of the native operating system may seem like a reasonably obvious decision, but it certainly isn?t one that every cross-platform application or windowing toolkit makes.

On one hand I think it’s great that there’s a serious focus on making Firefox look truly native. On the other hand I think it’s a pity that it’s only going to look native, and not be native, but I suppose that’s one of the biggest challenges of crossplatform development. In any case, things certainly look more promising than the Firefox 2 visual refresh.

Eastern Promises Mini-Review Comments 2 Comments

October 11th, 2007 ,

Eastern Promises is the new movie from Cronenberg, the director of A History of Violence.

The story is about Anna (Naomi Watts), a nurse in London who helps deliver the baby of a dying 14 year-old russian prostitute. The girls left-behind diary tells grim tales of rape, and leads Anna to the russian mafia where up-and-coming henchman Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen) may be the Annas only hope of finding justice and possibly peace for the newborn.

Eastern Promises is a good movie, but it’s one of those films that requires an emotional investment of the viewer. That sets it apart from A History of Violence, which was readily watchable even if its themes were also grim. If you’re ready for such an investment, Eastern Promises is a fine film.

Newscope: Master Plan Comments 21 Comments

Change is afoot! I have decided it is time to try something new. For me, that means focusing on my art. Thusly, I have quit my damn fine fulltime-job at Titoonic and decided to go freelance.

This is a big step for me. I have consciously quit a challenging, interesting job at an innovative company [...]

Sincerity Theory Comments 4 Comments

October 4th, 2007

When you’re hungry and doing what you love, you do good work. When people notice that work, you become successful. Success makes you a different person. Maybe you’re lazy, and can’t compel yourself to do the work. Maybe you’re burned out, or tired of it. Maybe you only ever had one good thing in you.

Success is a temptress and you want desperately to stay in her good graces. You start thinking of what it is people want from you so you can give it to them. Trouble is, you’ve stopped being yourself and started merely doing an impression of yourself. You have become insincere.

Apt observation. Strikes a chord with me. I believe I’ve felt this myself as well as seen it in others.

So, yes, doing what you love brings success, and by all means, throw yourself a nice big party, buy yourself a nice car, soak up the adulation of an adoring crowd. Then shut the fuck up and get back to work.

Read the full thing at Motherfucker.

The New Noscope [Update] Comments 9 Comments

October 2nd, 2007 , ,

And so, without much fanfare, here is the new design for Noscope. Lots and lots of things have changed, especially behind the scenes. Equally many are still broken or being upgraded. Lots of this to be fixed, updated or added soon.

Until that happens, here’s your chance to vent. Please, no bug reports yet, my own [...]
