Eastern Promises (2007) Mini-Review

The story is about Anna (Naomi Watts) is a nurse in London who helps deliver the baby of a dying 14 year-old russian prostitute. The girls left-behind diary tells grim tales of rape and abuse and leads Anna to the russian mafia where up-and-coming henchman Nikolai (Viggo Mortensen) may be the Annas only hope of finding justice and possibly peace for the newborn.

Eastern Promises is the new movie from Cronenberg, the director of A History of Violence. It’s a good movie, but it’s one of those films that requires an emotional investment of the viewer. That sets it apart from A History of Violence, which was readily watchable even if its themes were also grim. If you’re ready for such an investment, Eastern Promises is a fine film.

    i think you should point out that, despite the emotional investment needed for Eastern Promises, it’s by far the better film.

    History of Violence was so awkward.
