Newscope: Master Plan

Change is afoot! I have decided it is time to try something new. For me, that means focusing on my art. Thusly, I have quit my damn fine fulltime-job at Titoonic and decided to go freelance.

This is a big step for me. I have consciously quit a challenging, interesting job at an innovative company with the best and most talented colleagues in the business for the sole purpose of “focusing on my art” (cue heroic tune). The outlook could very well be that of a starving artist: bleak. One might even ask, why the hell did I do that? In fact, I’ve asked myself that very question more than a couple of times.

Essentially it all boils down to this: I love doing personal graphical work like the stuff that graces the new homepage. I would love to be able to make a living by doing just that. If I don’t try, I will most likely regret it more than I already regret quitting my job. So, as of November 1st, I will be freelance.

I will be taking on clients, doing small web-related projects to make a living: logos, identities, website / interface designs, usability consulting, that sort of thing. The idea is to make enough of a living to have some spare time to focus on those personal projects of mine. I mentioned an art book once, maybe now is the time. I was once asked if I sell posters, well I’d love to see if that’s worthwhile. For now, I’ve put my money on the prospect that things’ll work out dandy. I can’t wait to find out if it will.

Wow - congratulations man - following your dreams is never a small step to take and always a much needed one! I have to say, I've seen you grow so much as a design and as an artist since I first found you on the web about 8 years ago during the era of the firt Turtle Shell Story Site, I'm excited to see this next phase of your life help you grow as an artist and as a person.
Best of luck to you - keep us posted!

Good for you. It's the kind of step most people want to take, but few get around to, and for that I salute you.

I'll gladly buy an artbook to keep your dream afloat :)

I really appreciate that, but I'd like people to buy such an artbook not to support a starving artist, but rather because it's gonna be really really great. Also that way I can see if it's something I can actually do for a living.

It takes a lot of courage to throw away the comfort and security of a regular 9-5 job for a riskier, but potentially more rewarding venture - mega props for that.

    Good luck.

/ofg turns off "suck up" mode. :p

I'm hoping for the best, preparing for the worst. We'll see what happens.

    Thanks a lot.

Ummm. Why is the Titoonic site blank?

Shouldn't be, anymore. Was probably some backend maintenance.

All those people wish you good luck and that is awfully nice of them, but luck is an unknown and unpredictable phenomenon that leads to a favorable outcome. Now remember, we believe in hard work rather than divine gifts. That is why I know you will succeed. I never have believed in you because I had to, you have always deserved it. That is why I won't do as the others and wish you good luck. You don't need it

    I'm not :) I'd rather starve.

No but seriously I'm fully aware that it's going to be busy in many ways. But two things are important for me: I'm not doing this to get rich, rather to earn enough to pay the time I need to do the things I love and the things I want to see if can float. Also, when I do take a client, I'm committed. So hopefully I can avoid the clients that'll interfere with my sleep cycle. We'll see if this is blind pre-freelance na?vet?, but that's the manifesto so far!

Edit: Oh, and I realize the comment paging is broken for now.
