Gmail vs. Google Mail

There’s a new version of Gmail on its way. Supposedly it’s speedier and has better contact management. New screenshots also show a graphic change: it’s no longer Gmail, it’s now Google Mail.
Why? Here’s a few possibilities and observations:
- Who makes Gmail? Google does. Did you know? Maybe your mom didn’t. She will now.
- My my look at that little “mail” font. That looks like Trade Gothic, which we first saw when Google unveiled Analytics.
Much has been said on whether Google has a visual identity at all. Of course they do, it’s their homepage; meaning 4 primary colors, white background and the bevelled logotype. Still, it’s nice to see there’s some sort of refinement going on.

Actually I think not. I believe Google Mail has always been present, but only in UK. There was a trademark issue back in 2005 when Google launched Gmail there. Read BBC News article.

Oh well, so the journalist is located in the UK. Damn.

Same in Germany because of a trademark issue. gmail.de already existed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmail

My mistake. Specifially this section makes that clear: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gmail#Trademark_disputes

I got the new interface now. Contacts aren't working yet, but the rest seems faster, and Gmail now detects that I have Firebug installed, and recommends I disable it for faster performance.
