January 29th, 2008

Wikipedia is a fantastic place. So fantastic that they’ve dedicated an entire article just detail articles that are considered unusual. I love it.

Reeling From Sidereel Comments 5 Comments

January 25th, 2008 , ,

Sidereel.com is the discovery of the month. It’s a website that gathers links to TV-shows hosted on a plethora of video services all over the web. While it looks legal, however, I’m pretty sure it’s not. But it should be.

Utility: Move Window To Other Monitor Using Shortcut Key Comments Comment

January 25th, 2008 , ,

Using reSizer, you have only to press win + backspace to instantly move the currently focused window to the next monitor. There are other shortcuts as well, but this alone makes it worthwhile.

Type To Launch. Again. Comments 4 Comments

January 22nd, 2008 , , ,

Enso is now free. Enso is a “type-to-launch” meta application; a type of software that has had a renaissance these past few years, possibly starting with Quicksilver. The idea is that you invoke the software, type in a keyword, and an action is launched based on what you typed. The action could be to launch an app or invoke a spellcheck (( Actually, looking at the demo might explain this a bit better. )). Most recently, a type-to-launch feature was integrated in Windows Vista, Mac OSX Leopard and it’s scheduled to be a part of Firefox 3.

Gestures Is The New Black Comments Comment

Multi-touch trackpad. For me, that was the most interesting aspect of the just-announced-days-ago Apple Macbook Air. Unlike normal trackpads, a multi-touch trackpad also accepts input from two or more fingers. Before, you could only point, now you can pinch, swipe and turn; any gesture that requires more than one digit (or person).

Twitter Me This Comments 7 Comments

January 14th, 2008

Twitter is that social service everyone who isn’t talking about Facebook is talking about. It’s a form of nanoblogging wherein a single paragraph or a single link counts as publishable material. Sounds really really annoying and utterly useless you say? Yes and no. Lately I’ve found myself oddly attracted to the idea of delivering a continuous stream of useless bits of everyday life in the form of cleverly written one-liners. Now that I’ve been nominated for comment of the week (thanks Brendan), I might stand a chance.

Prints For Sale Comments 6 Comments

January 10th, 2008 ,

And so it was that I decided to start selling prints. I’ve been doing graphical work for the fun of it for 6 years. November last year I decided to cut the lifeline that was my previous employment. Part of the reason for going freelance was to explore opportunities such as this.

Creating Microworlds In Photoshop Comments 7 Comments

Round Worlds

It started with some beautiful pictures by Russian artist Alexandre Duret-Lutz and moved on to a discussion: how was this done? Well, the following technique might not be exactly the same one, but at least it’s really quick and rather hilarious.

It’s A Round World Comments 6 Comments

Beautiful rounded pictures by Alexandre Duret-Lutz. Unless the chap has a really wierd camera, I would guess it’s the work of Photoshops “polar coordinates” filter, combined with a little careful retouching. Well done.

Wordpress, Habari And The iPhone Comments 12 Comments

January 5th, 2008 ,

Not two days ago, I hurled myself into the fray once more, discussing usability with the Wordpress developers. The topic of discussion was a recently unveiled demo site showing off work being done to improve the backend design for the next version.

I do usability reviews for a living. Among other things, I’ve worked with [...]

Wikiscape Comments 4 Comments

January 2nd, 2008 , ,

For me, 2007 was the year of the wiki. I find myself looking up the oddest words on Wikipedia; did you know wiki is hawaiian for “fast”? It does and being able to look up such things all in one place made the web seem smaller. Really though, it just became useful.

Google wants in on [...]

Political Match-O-Matic Comments Comment

January 2nd, 2008

For the American readers about to engage in election, ABC News has a political match-maker that should help you find your candidate. I’m always bogged by the actual amount of candidates outside of the republican/democrat two-party setup; it’s just sad that voting on one of them would most likely be throwing away your vote.
